The Hand Looming Process
STEP 1: YARN PREPARATION
Breaking down large yarn rolls from the supplier into smaller rolls. The smaller rolls are then aligned on a wooden stand and threaded through a ridge, ensuring equal spacing and proper alignment.
STEP 2: ROLLING THE YARN
The aligned threads are rolled onto a large wooden wheel in specific sections. These sections are then more tightly rolled onto another wooden roll with paper between layers to prevent knotting and ensure smooth unrolling during weaving.
STEP 3: THREADING THE LOOM
The prepared yarn roll is placed into the loom. Each yarn thread is carefully pulled through the loom’s components with a tiny hook, requiring patience and precision.
STEP 4: WEAVING THE FABRIC
Horizontal yarns are interwoven with the prepared vertical yarns. Using a small boat-like shuttle, the weaver shoots the horizontal yarns through the vertical threads. Each pass is tightened with a ridge, and foot pedals are used to spread the vertical yarns, creating a woven fabric.
